The Strumica Region, Starting from Our Door
Hacienda Louisandro stands in Gabrovo, a farming village of a few hundred people at the northern foot of the Belasica mountains in southeastern North Macedonia. Orchards and vineyards run towards the valley floor, beech woods climb behind the houses, and the border with Greece crosses the ridge a little way to the south.
That position makes an unusually practical base. The region's waterfalls begin within walking distance, the thermal village of Bansko is about 6 km down the road, and Strumica is roughly 19 km away. Three countries sit within an easy drive of the same bed.
Three borders, one warm valley
The Belasica ridge is a fault-block range roughly 60 km long, shared between Greece, North Macedonia and Bulgaria, and it closes the southern horizon at Gabrovo. Below it spreads the Strumica valley, irrigated from Lake Vodocha and farmed intensively thanks to a humid subtropical climate with July highs around 30 C.
That geography explains the region's two different pleasures: cool beech forest and cold streams up on the mountain, vegetables, fruit and outdoor tables down in the valley. Most of our guests end up doing a bit of both each day.
Short trips first
The nearest outings need almost no planning. The Gabrovo waterfalls are about 2 km up the hillside, Kolešino waterfall roughly 4 km further, Bansko and its thermal water about 6 km, and the springs at Mokrino around 7 km from the village.
Smolare waterfall sits roughly 12 km away, about 18 minutes by car, and Strumica itself is roughly 19 km or 25 minutes. Those six destinations fill several days before you need to think about anything bigger.
Full days and overnight trips
For a full day, guests usually pick the Belasica ridge and Tumba Peak, or the Roman city of Stobi roughly 100 km north, or a vineyard day in the Tikves region about 98 km away. Skopje, roughly 150 km, and Thessaloniki, roughly 132 km, both work as long city days.
A few places genuinely deserve more than a day: Ohrid is roughly 325 km, Kavala and Philippi about 230 km, and Rila Monastery around 160 km into Bulgaria. We help you shape those as two- or three-night extensions rather than forcing them into one exhausting drive.
When to come
April to June and September to October suit almost everything: comfortable walking weather, full streams and clear views. July and August are hot in the valley, which is when the pool, the waterfalls and an evening in Strumica earn their keep.
Late winter has its own draw. The Strumica Carnival falls on the Tuesday after Clean Monday, and harvest season in September and October brings the year's busiest, most fragrant weeks on the land.

Getting here
Skopje airport is roughly 150 km and about 130 minutes away; Thessaloniki roughly 132 km and about 135 minutes including the border. We arrange transfers from both.
Getting around
A hire car gives the most freedom, but guests without one manage well: we run guided trips, city tours and the tractor outing from the village.
Documents
Carry passports for everyone in the car. North Macedonian borders are always checked; Bulgaria-Greece checks were lifted on 1 January 2025, though spot checks still occur.
Best months
April-June and September-October for walking and sightseeing; May to September for the pool and lake water; winter for quiet roads and thermal pools.
