Tikves: Vranec, Cellars and a Lake
The Tikves plain around Kavadarci and Negotino is the centre of Macedonian wine production, with vines cultivated for more than 120 years and the country's largest winery, founded in 1885, still working in Kavadarci.
From the hacienda it is roughly 98 km and about 105 minutes by road, which makes it a proper wine day out rather than an afternoon errand, and one best done with our driver.
The grape and the glass
Vranec is the region's flagship red: deep, tannic and built to age, and it is the bottle to order first. Alongside it come local whites and the blends of the plain, in styles that have more in common with the southern Balkans than with western Europe.
The Tikves winery in Kavadarci, founded in 1885, is the oldest and largest in the country and is described as the largest winery in Southeast Europe. Tastings and tours are organised there, and booking ahead matters, especially for groups.
Small cellars and village tables
Between the big names, family wineries in the villages pour their own barrels, and lunch in Kavadarci tends to be generous and agricultural. The plain is also known for its yogurt and sour milk, which appear on the table whether you ordered them or not.
September and October are harvest, the most atmospheric weeks to be in the region, and spring brings the vineyards into leaf.
Lake Tikves, if the day allows
Twelve kilometres southwest of Kavadarci, past Vozarci, Lake Tikves is the country's largest artificial lake by area, depth and length: about 14 square kilometres and 29 km long, created in 1968 behind a 104 m dam, with three permanent islands.
Summer water sits around 24 C, and boat trips run in the warm months. Add it only if the day has room; the wineries are the reason you came.
