Gabrovo, the Village We Live In
Gabrovo is a small agricultural village in Strumica Municipality, in the southern Belasica foothills about 8-10 km from the Greek border. A few hundred people live here, and the land around the houses is worked intensively: orchards, vines and vegetables on the lower ground, beech woods climbing the slopes behind.
For our guests the village is the reason the retreat works. Nothing you need for a good day is more than a few minutes away on foot, and the region's real sights begin at the edge of the fields.
A village, not a resort
The census of 2002 recorded 399 inhabitants, 398 of them Macedonian, and the village has stayed small since. There is no tourist strip: there are farm gates, a church, irrigation channels and neighbours who will tell you what the weather is going to do.
That is the setting guests choose the retreat for. Boutique rooms and a pool exist inside a genuinely working village, and the restaurant cooks from the land you can see from the terrace.
The microclimate
The northern foot of the Belasica is warm and sunny, part of the same climate that makes the Strumica valley one of the country's most productive farming areas. Vegetables and fruit ripen early, and winters are milder than the mountains directly south would suggest.
Walk up, and the climate changes quickly: cool beech forest, cold streams and a ridge that holds snow in winter. The two worlds sit about an hour apart on foot.
Walking straight from the door
The regional tourism authority runs a marked trail cluster starting in Gabrovo that leads up to three waterfalls, and the wider network of goat paths continues towards the ridge. Residents also offer farmhouse food and rakija, and the retreat's own tractor rides use these same lanes.
Beyond the village, Strumica is roughly 19 km by road, the spa village of Bansko about 6 km, and Kolešino with its waterfall roughly 4 km. Everything else in the region is a short drive.

The marked Gabrovo waterfall trail starts in the village; allow about an hour round trip to the falls and back at an easy pace.
