Skopje: Arrival City, and Worth a Day
Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia, with 526,502 inhabitants in the 2021 census, and for most of our guests it is the arrival point: Skopje International Airport, the larger of the country's two international airports, is roughly 150 km and about 130 minutes from the retreat.
Plan the transfer with us, then decide whether the capital becomes a stop on the way in or a long-day trip later in the week. Both work.
Two thousand years on one river
The Skopje valley has been continuously inhabited since at least the Chalcolithic. The Roman city of Scupi was founded in the late 1st century under Domitian, destroyed by an earthquake in 518 and rebuilt under Justinian I.
What you see today stacks Ottoman, Yugoslav and post-2010 layers on top of that: the Old Bazaar on the north bank, the Kale fortress above the confluence, the Stone Bridge and a much-discussed monumental city centre.
A day in the capital
The Old Bazaar is the reason to come: one of the largest bazaars in the Balkans outside Istanbul, still functioning rather than staged, with tea gardens and coppersmiths between the lanes.
Add the Kale fortress for the view, cross the Stone Bridge for the squares and the riverfront, and eat lunch in the bazaar. If you have two extra hours, Matka Canyon with its lake, caves and kayak rental is a short drive away.
Timing the trip
As a day excursion, Skopje is a long day: roughly 150 km and about 130 minutes each way. Leave after breakfast, spend six hours in the city and be home for a late dinner.
April-June and September-October are the pleasant months for walking the bazaar and the riverfront. In winter the valley can be cold and smoggy.
