Ohrid: The Extension Worth Booking
Ohrid is the largest town on Lake Ohrid, with just over 38,000 inhabitants, and it is said once to have had 365 churches, one for every day of the year, which earned it the name 'Jerusalem of the Balkans'.
Both the town, inscribed in 1979, and the lake, in 1980, are on UNESCO's World Heritage list, and Ohrid is one of only around forty sites listed as both cultural and natural. It is roughly 325 km and about 300 minutes from the retreat: an extension, not a day trip.
What the lake is
Lake Ohrid is one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe: a maximum depth of 288 m, an area of 358 square kilometres, more than 200 endemic species and sediments possibly three to five million years old.
Swimming here is a different experience from the valley lakes, clear and deep, with beaches along the shore and boat trips out from the town.
The old town
The upper town stacks churches, Ottoman houses and cobbled lanes above the water, with the monastery of St John at Kaneo on the cliff as the classic view. Ancient theatre, mosaics and the church of St Sophia fill a day on foot.
Evenings are the town's other half: lakeside terraces, fish from the lake and a promenade that runs for most of the bay.
How to plan it from Gabrovo
Be honest with the distance: about 4.5 to 5 hours each way, so one night is the minimum and two or three is the right number. Guests usually run it at the end of a stay, with the last night back at the hacienda before the airport.
June to September is lake season, while May and late September are quieter with good walking weather. July and August are the busiest and hottest weeks in town.
