Getting from the Airport to the Valley

At the haciendaOn request

Most guests reach us through one of two airports: Skopje International (SKP), the larger of North Macedonia's two international airports, or Thessaloniki 'Makedonia' (SKG) in northern Greece. We arrange transfers from both, door to door, in a vehicle that meets you at arrivals.

The drive is longer than the distance suggests on a map, because the last stretch runs through the Belasica foothills into Gabrovo village. It is a good hour and a half to two hours of road either way, and we would rather you spent it looking out of the window than negotiating a hire car in the dark.

Skopje, the northern route

Skopje airport is roughly 150 km from the retreat, about 130 minutes by road. The route runs south through the Vardar valley, passing the turn-offs for Stobi and the Tikves wine country, which is worth knowing if you plan a northbound day trip later in the week.

Guests who fly into Skopje often build a city day around their arrival or departure, since the capital's Old Bazaar and fortress are worth half a day on their own.

Thessaloniki, the southern route

Thessaloniki airport, 13 km southeast of the city, is the third-busiest in Greece and often has more flight options and lower fares than Skopje. The retreat is roughly 132 km and about 135 minutes away, including the border crossing at Bogorodica-Evzoni.

That crossing is the country's main gateway with Greece and can add 20-60 minutes at summer weekends. Passports for every passenger are required, so keep them in the cabin bag rather than the suitcase.

How the transfer works

Book the transfer when you book the room, and send the flight number. The driver tracks the flight, meets you at arrivals and drives you straight to Gabrovo without any intermediate stops unless you ask for one.

The same arrangement works in reverse at the end of your stay, timed backwards from your flight's departure rather than guessed.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport should we choose?
Skopje is slightly closer and simpler, roughly 150 km away. Thessaloniki often has cheaper or more frequent flights, at roughly 132 km plus a border crossing. Choose on flights, and we will collect you from either.
Can you collect us late at night?
Yes, provided the transfer is booked in advance with the flight number, so the driver is at the airport whenever the flight lands.
Is a hire car worth it instead?
For guests who want freedom during the week, yes. But for a stay built around guided activities and our day trips, the transfer plus arranged excursions is often the calmer option.
