Crossing Borders from the Retreat
Hacienda Louisandro sits roughly 8-10 km from the Greek border ridge, and Bulgaria is not much further in the other direction. Three countries within ninety minutes of the same bed is the honest selling point of this valley, and it depends entirely on knowing which crossing to use.
This page is the practical backbone: the crossings guests actually use, what to carry and how long to allow.
The three crossings that matter
Into Greece, the main crossing is Bogorodica-Evzoni at Gevgelija, on the E75/A1 where the Greek motorway from Athens ends. It is the direct route to Thessaloniki and the coast.
The lakeside alternative is Star Dojran-Doirani, smaller and often quicker, open around the clock and convenient if you are already heading for Lake Dojran. Into Bulgaria, the crossing is Novo Selo-Petrich, whose Bulgarian checkpoint is called Zlatarevo: the southernmost of the three North Macedonia-Bulgaria crossings, the only one on flat ground, and generally the most relaxed.
Documents and car papers
Carry passports for every passenger, including children. North Macedonia is outside the EU and Schengen, so its borders are always staffed and always checked.
Since 1 January 2025, systematic checks at internal Schengen land borders with and between Bulgaria and Romania have been lifted. In practice that means the Kulata-Promachonas crossing between Bulgaria and Greece, on the Sofia-Thessaloniki axis, no longer has routine passport control, though spot checks still occur. It is relevant for guests running Kerkini or Serres through Bulgaria.
Timing and queues
Free-flow driving times from the village are about an hour and a quarter to either Greek crossing, and about an hour and three-quarters to Novo Selo-Petrich or through to Kulata-Promachonas.
Add buffer in summer: weekends and public holidays produce the longest queues at Bogorodica-Evzoni, often twenty to sixty minutes, while Star Dojran-Doirani and Novo Selo-Petrich stay quieter. If a queue is building, the lakeside crossing is the escape route.

Allow an extra 20-60 minutes at Bogorodica-Evzoni on summer weekends and public holidays; the other two crossings are usually calm.
