Dojran: Warm Water, Old Nets, Hard History
Lake Dojran covers about 43 square kilometres, shared between North Macedonia and Greece, and it is the smallest and shallowest tectonic lake in the country with a maximum depth of 10 m. Sitting at only 148 m altitude with a Mediterranean-influenced microclimate, its summer water reaches 25-27 C.
It is the closest proper lake day from the retreat, roughly 35 km and about 50 minutes by road, and it packs more into a shoreline than most lakes twice its size: fishing tradition, a destroyed city and a Commonwealth war cemetery across the water.
The mandra, a fishing method almost unique
Dojran is known for the traditional 'mandra' method: reed fences worked in cooperation with fish-attracting birds, one of the few places in the world where fish are still caught this way. The installations stand in the shallow water and photograph beautifully in the morning.
Fishing here goes back further than the villages. Herodotus wrote in the 5th century BC about Paeonian lake settlements, and about 15 fish species live in the lake today.
Swimming, eating, and the shore
Star Dojran and Nov Dojran, the two villages on the Macedonian shore, are lined with fish restaurants serving carp, perch and other lake fish, and they are the reason many guests drive over. The water's warmth and the lake's iodine-rich mud are promoted locally for their therapeutic character.
Summer weekends are busy on the beaches; spring and autumn give you the same lakefront with a fraction of the traffic.
The First World War around the lake
The old city of Dojran was completely ruined during the First World War, when the Salonika Front ran along these hills, and today's two villages stand on the site of that city.
On the Greek side, the CWGC Doiran Memorial commemorates the 2,171 missing of the British Salonika Force from the 1915-1918 campaign, beside Doiran Military Cemetery with 1,338 Commonwealth burials. Reaching them means the Star Dojran-Doirani crossing, which operates around the clock, and passports for everyone in the car.
