Isar: The Hill That Was Idomenae
Above the village of Marvinci in the Vardar valley, a few kilometres from the small town of Valandovo, rises a hill called Isar. From the Bronze Age to late antiquity it was occupied, and by the 4th century BC its people knew it as Idomenae, a town of ancient Macedonia.
Nothing is ticketed, fenced or signed. That is the appeal for the right kind of guest: a real ancient site in open farmland, a short drive from the retreat.
What the digging found
Systematic excavation at Isar ran from 1977 to 1986 and uncovered more than 200 graves along with remnants of a temple and a stadium in the ancient Roman style. The settlement's name appears in artefacts of the 4th century BC.
The Tabula Peutingeriana, the Roman road map, places Idomenae between Stena and Tauriana, which fixes it in the geography of ancient Macedonia. Work in the lower Vardar valley began systematically in 1976, and the nearby Stakina Cesma locality has yielded a Roman domus with ten rooms, tessellated and sectile mosaics and a marble-plated apsidal pool.
Visiting an open site
There is no ticket office, museum or shade at Isar. Many finds from the campaigns went to the Museum of the Republic of North Macedonia in Skopje, so you are reading the ground rather than a display case.
Bring sturdy shoes and water, go in the morning in summer, and let us brief you on what stood where. The hill rewards a guide far more than a signboard would.
How the day shapes up
Valandovo sits on the Strumica-Dojran road, roughly 20 km and about 35 minutes from Gabrovo, so Isar, lunch in town and an afternoon at Lake Dojran make an easy loop of well under 100 km of driving.
For guests who have already been to Stobi, Isar is the opposite experience: no paths, no crowds, and a hill that still needs imagination. Many prefer it.
