Gevgelija and the Hill of Vardarski Rid
Gevgelija is the last North Macedonian town before Greece, on the Vardar river at the country's main border crossing. It is also a real town worth an afternoon: coffee, shopping and a hill on its edge where a town of Early Antiquity, also known as Gordynia, once stood.
The retreat is roughly 52 km and about 70 minutes away by road, close enough for a half-day that can end in hot water at Negorci, 5 km further on.
The hill and its stoa
Excavations at Vardarski Rid have exposed the layout of a monumental stoa, an acropolis and other parts of the settlement, giving a readable plan of a town from the earliest historical layers of the valley.
The hill still works, just differently: today it doubles as a picnic and viewpoint spot over the Vardar valley, which makes it an easy stop that combines a view with some very old walls.
Why the town matters for travel
Gevgelija sits at Bogorodica-Evzoni, the country's main crossing with Greece, where the motorway from Skopje meets the road towards Thessaloniki. That makes it the practical coffee or fuel stop before any excursion into Greece.
Because the town sits a little closer to us than the border posts themselves, guests often break a journey here in both directions rather than sitting in a queue.
Building the day
A comfortable Gevgelija day looks like this: the hill in the morning while it is cool, lunch in town, then Negorci Spa 5 km north for the afternoon, and the drive home before dinner.
Add the Isar site near Valandovo on the return and you have filled a full day with a town, two ancient sites and hot springs, all within about 70 minutes of the hacienda.
