Kratovo, in the Crater
Kratovo sits at 600 m on the western slopes of Mount Osogovo, inside the crater of an extinct volcano, and it looks like nowhere else in the country: steep-roofed stone houses wedged into a ravine, towers on the skyline and arched bridges crossing two rivers through the town.
It is a long day from the retreat, roughly 106 km and about 108 minutes each way via Stip, and it earns the drive.
Towers of a mining town
Seventeen medieval towers once stood here, twelve on one side of the town and five on the other, built by a community grown rich on gold, silver, lead, iron and copper. Six survive in good condition.
Zlatko's Tower is the oldest, from 1365, and the Simic Tower of 1370, built by the local ruler Kostadin Dejanov, is the tallest at 21.8 m, with a city clock installed in it in 1921.
Bridges, rivers and money
The Kratovska and Manceva rivers run through town, crossed by stone bridges that date mainly from the Ottoman period. The Hawzi Pasha bridge on the Manceva was built in 1833 on towers 28 m and 29 m high.
The wealth behind all of it came from mining: Konstantin Dejan minted his own silver coins here, and merchants from Ragusa, today's Dubrovnik, formed a large colony in the town.
Making the long day work
Leave by nine in the morning, spend the middle of the day walking the towers and the bazaar, and eat lunch in a traditional kruchma before the drive home. That fills eight to nine hours comfortably and gets you back by dinner.
April to October gives the clearest walking weather and autumn is beautiful on the Osogovo slopes. In winter the crater can be icy at 600 m.

Roughly 106 km and about 108 minutes from Gabrovo via Stip. Treat it as a long day and leave by 09:00.
When to go
April-October for the clearest conditions; autumn is the prettiest on the Osogovo slopes. Winter can be icy inside the crater.
