Serres: A Greek City Within Reach
Serres is the capital of the Serres regional unit and the second-largest city of Central Macedonia after Thessaloniki, with a municipal population of 70,703 in 2021, sitting on a fertile plain at about 70 m.
From the retreat the drive is roughly 118 km and about 125 minutes via the Kulata-Promachonas crossing and the A25 motorway, which makes it the closest genuinely Greek city break to Gabrovo.
An old name on a young plain
Herodotus mentions the city as Siris in the 5th century BC; Theopompus knew it as Sirra, and the Romans as Serrae. The plain it commands has been farmed since long before any of those names.
Today that history shows up as Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches in and around the centre, alongside the much more modern business of being a university and market town.
What a half-day there looks like
Coffee in the plateia, a walk through the old quarters, lunch in a restaurant that has no interest in tourists, and then the shopping that the border towns cannot offer. That is the honest appeal of Serres, and it is a real one.
Avoid mid-afternoon in July and August, when the plain is at its hottest; spring and autumn are the comfortable months for strolling.
Pairing it with Kerkini
Lake Kerkini lies about 40 minutes northwest of the city, so a two-stop Greek day is the standard plan: birds and a boat in the morning, plates and shopping in the afternoon.
Serres also sits on the sensible route east towards Kavala and Philippi, which makes it a natural staging stop on the longer Aegean itinerary.
