Kerkini: Pelicans at Dawn
Lake Kerkini is an artificial reservoir in Central Macedonia, Greece, created in 1932 and redeveloped in 1980 over what had been extensive marshland. It is now one of the premier birdwatching sites in the country, with more than 320 bird species recorded on the migratory flyway towards the Aegean, the Balkans and the Black Sea.
It is a Ramsar-protected wetland at the foot of Mount Beles near the Bulgarian border, roughly 95 km and about 130 minutes from the retreat including the crossings.
The birds and the buffalo
The star species are Dalmatian pelicans, alongside herons, cormorants and flamingos, and the shoreline pastures are grazed by water buffalo that bathe at the margin. Spring, from April to mid-June, brings migration and breeding plumage.
Winter is the other peak: from December to February, large gatherings of Dalmatian pelicans winter on the lake in soft, photographer-friendly light.
The boat trip
Traditional wooden boats, called 'plava', run guided trips on the lake, typically ninety minutes to several hours, with dawn the best time for wildlife. Book ahead; we arrange the sailing with a local skipper, ideally with a birding guide.
The trip is calm and shallow-water, suitable for families and photographers, and it is the only way to reach the best of the wetland.
The route and the border
Two realistic routes exist from Gabrovo: north through Bulgaria, via the Novo Selo-Petrich crossing and then Kulata-Promachonas into Greece, or south through Greece via Bogorodica-Evzoni and Kilkis. Either way, passports for everyone.
The Bulgarian-Greek crossing has had no systematic checks since 1 January 2025, though spot checks occur; the North Macedonian border is always staffed. Start early: the boat is worth the alarm.
