Heraclea Sintica, Found in 2002
Heraclea Sintica, sometimes called Heraclea Strymonica, is an ancient city near the Bulgarian village of Rupite, founded between 356 and 339 BC by Philip II of Macedon with settlers from Heraclea in Mygdonia.
It then disappears. An earthquake around 425 AD destroyed much of it and the river flooded the forum, by about 500 AD it was effectively abandoned, and its identification was only settled in 2002, when a large Latin inscription came to light.
The detective story
The inscription turned out to be a letter of emperor Galerius and Caesar Maximinus II from 308 AD, and its discovery allowed Assoc. Prof. Georgi Mitrev of the University of Plovdiv to confirm the identification of the site.
The city had minted its own coins in antiquity, and Demetrius, son of Philip V, was slain there. Those fragments, plus the inscription, rebuilt a name that had been missing for fifteen centuries.
Visiting a working excavation
What you see is trenches and exposed walls rather than a finished heritage park, which is precisely the appeal: an ancient city in the middle of being rediscovered, usually with nobody else there.
There is little shade and little infrastructure. Bring water and a hat, go in the morning, and let us brief you on the layout before you walk it.
Fitting it into a week
From the hacienda it is roughly 45 km and about 60 minutes via Petrich, so the natural day is Rupite's springs first, Heraclea after, and Petrich for lunch.
Guests who have already seen Stobi often say they prefer this: Stobi is the finished Roman city, Heraclea is the one still being found. Spring and autumn suit the open, shadeless ground best.
