Rupite, the Prophetess and the Volcano
Rupite is a village in Bulgaria's Blagoevgrad Province, 11 km northeast of Petrich on the western bank of the Struma river, best known as the home of the clairvoyant Baba Vanga. The landscape is dominated by the 281 m Kozhuh hill, part of the rim of an extinct volcano and protected as a natural landmark since 1962.
Hot springs pour out of that volcanic ground at 71-78 C with an average discharge of 35 litres per second, and the whole place has an atmosphere no other excursion from the retreat quite matches.
Who Baba Vanga was
Baba Vanga was a blind Bulgarian clairvoyant whose reputation spread far beyond the Balkans. She built her house here in 1970 and founded the church of St Petka in 1994, painting its interior herself, and she is buried beside it.
Her grave is still a place of pilgrimage, and on any given day you will meet visitors who treat the site with the seriousness of a shrine. Whatever one thinks of the prophecies, the church and its setting are genuinely moving.
Springs, birds and reptiles
The mineral springs, too hot for bathing at source, feed pools and spa facilities in the area; check locally which are open to visitors when you come.
The wider spot is remarkably rich: 201 bird species have been recorded, along with four tortoise species and almost all of Bulgaria's snake species. Rupite lies on Via Aristotelis, one of the country's two main bird migration routes.
The city in the next field
At the southwestern foot of Kozhuh lie the remains of Heraclea Sintica, an ancient city founded by Philip II and only positively identified in 2002 from an imperial Latin inscription of 308 AD.
Rupite and Heraclea are a natural pairing, and Petrich for lunch completes a half-day that runs from prophecy to archaeology to grilled meat, roughly 46 km and about 55 minutes from the hacienda.

Roughly 46 km and about 55 minutes from Gabrovo via the Novo Selo-Petrich crossing and Petrich.
When to go
Year-round; the springs are at their most theatrical in winter, and birdlife peaks in the spring and autumn migrations. Summer mornings are best.
