Sandanski, Where Bulgaria Goes Mild

~63 km~75 minDay trip

Sandanski, called Sveti Vrach until 1947 and renamed for the revolutionary Yane Sandanski, is a town and recreation centre in the Sandanski-Petrich valley at the foot of the Pirin mountains, along the Sandanska Bistritsa river.

Its claim to fame is the climate: the highest average annual temperature in Bulgaria at about 16 C, with around 2,700 sunshine hours a year. From the hacienda it is roughly 63 km and about 75 minutes through the Novo Selo-Petrich crossing.

A town built for convalescence

The town sits between 240 and 300 m and has developed amphitheatrically on the southwest flanks of the Pirin, with a broad, park-like centre and plane trees over the main boulevards.

A relatively high concentration of thermal springs around the town supports spa hotels and pools, which is why Bulgarians have been coming here to rest for decades. It feels softer than any Bulgarian town has a right to, twenty kilometres from a border.

Wellness with wine attached

Melnik is a short drive away, which makes the classic combination simple: a spa morning in Sandanski, then wine tasting among the sand pyramids in the afternoon.

For guests who would rather keep the day slow, the town itself supplies the programme: thermal pools, a long lunch and a walk under the planes.

An overnight base for Bulgaria

Sandanski's spa hotels make it the natural base for a two-day Bulgarian loop taking in Melnik, the Rozhen Monastery and even Rila Monastery.

It also suits guests who want one genuinely restful day abroad without any sightseeing obligation: no tickets, no queues, just warm water and good food.
