A Day on the Shore of Lake Vodocha

~26 km~35 minHalf-day trip

Lake Vodocha, sometimes called Strumica Lake, is the region's large artificial storage reservoir near the village of Popčevo, west of Strumica. It is deep, 38.7 m at its maximum, and it does a quiet double job: irrigating the valley's crops and giving walkers, anglers and birdwatchers a place to spend a morning.

From the retreat it is roughly 26 km and about 35 minutes by road, which makes it the easiest 'different landscape' outing in the region after the mountain.

What the lake is for

The lake stores water for supply and for irrigating the fields of the Strumica valley, and the regional tourism authority also lists it for rest, recreation, research and education. It is a working reservoir rather than a resort lake, and that is precisely why the shores stay calm.

Permitted activities include hiking, jogging, biking and fishing, and the fish stock consists mainly of carp, roach and belvica. Swimming is not what the lake is for, so plan your water time for the hacienda pool.

Birds and the shoreline

A significant number of marsh birds live around the lake, which makes it a low-key birdwatching stop, especially in spring and autumn migration. Bring binoculars rather than expecting hides or signage.

The shore alternates between open water views, reed beds and views back towards the city and the mountains, and tracks make an easy loop for a family walk or an unhurried bike ride.

Turning it into a full day

Marked trails link the lake with Vodoča village and the St Leontius monastery complex, and continue towards the Veljusa monastery, so a walking day can combine water, church and convent without repeating a road.

Other trails approach from Momin Bunar via Popčevo. Pack a picnic from the hacienda; there is no restaurant row on this shore, and that is part of the appeal.
