Two Wheels Through the Valley
The country between Gabrovo, the Belasica foothills and the Strumica valley is made for cycling: narrow asphalt lanes, farm tracks and almost no traffic. Our guided rides run at varying levels, from a flat evening loop through the villages to hillier routes that climb towards the mountain villages.
Because the retreat sits in the middle of that network, rides start and finish at the door. No trailer, no transfer, no lost half hour at either end.
The routes we use
Valley rides link Gabrovo with the neighbouring villages, running between orchards, vineyards and irrigated fields with the Belasica ridge permanently in view. They are gently rolling and suit anyone comfortable on a bike.
For more of a workout, routes head towards the foothill villages of Novo Selo municipality, sixteen small settlements spread across the lower slopes, or out towards Murtino on the western side of the valley. Riding is also one of the listed activities at Lake Vodocha, where shore tracks make a good destination for a longer outing.
Levels and pacing
Rides are grouped by level and pace, so a family with children is not pushed into the same loop as regular cyclists. Distances are set on the day with the weather and the group in mind.
If part of your party prefers four wheels to two, the tractor village tour follows much of the same countryside at walking pace, and the two groups often end up comparing notes over lunch.
When to ride
Spring and autumn are ideal: warm air, green or golden fields, and little traffic on the village roads. July and August are workable if you start early, because midday temperatures in the valley regularly pass 30 C.
Winter riding is quiet and clear on the valley floor, though the mountain tracks hold mud and the days are short. Bring a windproof layer; the valley collects cold air on still mornings.
