The Villages, at Tractor Speed
The tractor ride is our least serious and most liked activity. Guests climb aboard and rattle through Gabrovo and the neighbouring villages at walking pace, with drinks, local food or live music laid on somewhere along the route.
It sounds like a gimmick until you do it. At tractor speed the village is not scenery but a working place: fields being watered, tobacco or vegetables on a trailer, neighbours waving from gateways.
What you ride through
Gabrovo itself is a village of a few hundred people in the Belasica foothills, ringed by orchards, vineyards and beech woods. The route runs out past the last houses and through the same farmed landscape that supplies our kitchen.
Beyond the village lie the small settlements of the lower slopes, part of a rural municipality of sixteen villages and fewer than seven thousand inhabitants in total. That is why the lanes stay quiet and the villages look the way they have for decades.
Drinks, food and music
A ride without a stop would miss the point. We plan the outing around a pause for drinks and local food, and on the right evenings there is live music, which turns the tour into a village party on wheels.
It is also the most family-friendly thing we run. Children are welcome on the trailer, the pace is safe, and the whole outing is over in time for dinner.
When to book it
Late afternoon is the best light, when the ridge turns gold and the working day ends in the fields. Harvest weeks in September and October are the most atmospheric; blossom season in spring is the prettiest.
Guests staying a week often book the tractor ride early in the stay, because it is the fastest way to understand the landscape they will spend the rest of the week walking through.
