Seeing the Towns with Someone Local
The towns of southeastern North Macedonia are not on most visitors' maps, and they reward a guide: markets that do not advertise, restaurants without English menus, and the small civic details that make a Balkan town worth an afternoon. We run guided city tours from the retreat to Strumica and to the regional towns around it.
Tours are arranged for the day and pace that suit you, with transport from the door. Guests who prefer to explore alone can use them as a first orientation, then go back on their own.
Strumica, the first stop
Strumica is the largest city of the southeast, roughly 19 km or about 25 minutes from Gabrovo, and the natural first tour. A circuit usually takes in the fortress hill above the city, the church of the Fifteen Holy Hieromartyrs, the 17th-century Orta Mosque and the square with its clock tower.
Leave time for the market and for eating. The city's restaurants, bars and pavement tables are the region's social centre, and evenings there are busier than most guests expect from a town of 34,000.
The regional towns
Radovish, roughly 38 km away in about 42 minutes, sits under the granite and marble Plachkovica range and works well for a market morning with a mountain backdrop. Valandovo, about 20 km and 35 minutes, is the practical lunch stop for the archaeology at Isar.
Further out, Gevgelija roughly 52 km away is the southern border town on the Vardar, Berovo about 46 km away sits in pine country, and Kratovo, roughly 106 km north, is a stone town of towers and bridges inside an extinct volcano. Each is a different day, and we will tell you honestly which ones fit your week.
What a guided day includes
Transport from the hacienda and back, a host who handles parking, ordering and translation, and a route that leaves room for the unscheduled stop, which is usually the part guests remember.
Timing is yours. Half a day covers Strumica comfortably; a full day lets you add a fortress, a monastery or a long lunch without hurrying.
